WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: early

Weather conditions:

Spring was very early with warm weather. Snow melt was intensive in April, and snow cover reduced to 50% by the end of month. Prolonged cooling started in the beginning of May, and weather in 2000 breeding season was somewhat colder than average for the islands. Complete melting off snow on flat areas occurred in late May. Weather became warm in late July - August. Strong rains and prolonged stroms were not recorded, and weather conditions were favourable for breeding of birds.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity: dry
Date of 50% snow-cover: end of April
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow: end of May

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

As usual Turnstones, Common Snipes, Ruffs, Redshanks and Oystercatchers were breeding on the islands, but nesting of Wood Sandpiper was recorded for the first time. Number of nesting Common Eiders declined sharply, because warm spring prevented settling of migrating birds for breeding. Number of Greyleg Geese continued to grow.
Unfavourable situation developed with food supply for most fish-eating birds. Chicks of Great Black-backed and Herring gulls died in mass, and reproductive performance of these species was low. Arctic Terns and Black Guillemots cancelled nesting in mass, and only Great and Double-crested cormorants were increasing numbers and had successful reproduction.
Dunlins and Purple Sandpipers were numerous on autumn migration, while passage of Ruffs was weak and short. Little Stints, Curlew Sandpipers and Bar-tailed Godwits were solitary. Five to six White-tailed Eagles were staying on the islands in November during pup delivery by Atlantic Seals Halichoerus grypus.
